The iQ24 Steam Sterilizer, by Philips Avent, is a 2-cycle steam sterilizer for up to six Avent baby bottles, or up to two Philips Avent Breast Pumps. Mode 1 sterilizes in 6 minutes and keeps the contents sterilized for up to 6 hours, if unopened. Mode 2 keeps contents sterile by continuously repeating the 6 minute cycle for 24 hours. The iQ24 utilizes the hospital principle, of using the intensive heat of steam to eliminate harmful bacteria. This steam sterilizer is the first intelligent steam sterilizer and is designed to communicate each phase of the sterilization cycle, so you stay informed. The 24-hour mode can be paused, by pressing the pause button, to remove an item, without interrupting the sterilization cycle. Pros:
- The iQ24 is tall, rather than wide, making it easy to store in compact spaces.
- The sterilizing cycle is rather quick, at only 6 minutes, and has a sound alert to tell you when the process has been completed.
- This product has two settings, one that will keep the bottles sanitized for up to 6 hours, and one that will re-sterilize them throughout the course of a day to keep them sterile for 24 hours.
- The iQ24 sterilizer is very easy to use, simply fill with distilled water , using the provided measuring cup, put the items to be sterilized in, and turn it on.
- This sterilizer is large enough to fit a breast pump, 6 bottles and nipples all at the same time.
- This sterilizer takes all of the guess work out of sterilizing baby bottles, nipples, and breast pumps. Simply turn it on and walk away. The system will tell you when it is done.
- This sanitizer comes with two 9oz Airflex Natural Feeding Bottles, and two extra soft, Slow Flow Nipples, a measuring cup, for measuring the right amount of distilled water, and tongs, for removing hot bottles from the sanitizer.
Cons:
- The iQ24 must be used with distilled water, which means purchasing distilled water on a fairly regular basis.
- Even with the distilled water, the sterilizer will have to be “descaled” (remove mineral build-up) every 4 weeks.
- This sterilizer does not have a faster cycle than the 6 minutes, so if you need a bottle quicker than that, you will have to boil it in a pan of boiling water.
- The manufacturer does not recommend using this sterilizer with glass bottles, instead they recommend their BPA-free plastic bottles. Plastic bottles (even BPA-free bottles) can leach out plasticizers when they are heated up above 200°F.
- System only works with Avent Bottles, this can cause an issue if your baby is picky about the bottle that he drinks from.
